Andal’s Garland by Helen Burns

This book is utterly absorbing, taking you from India in the 8th century to present day, in an interwoven dialogue between the past and the present and the yearnings of the heart.

Kate moore- the woman they could not silence

If you’ve been vaguely paying attention to the popular press this last year you would have seen the ongoing battle in the American courts brought by Britney Spears as she tried to have a ‘conservatorship’ order lifted that had allowed her father to completely control her life. It seemed incredible that these sorts of laws could still be enacted on women in order for men to control them and yet it used to be so much worse.

This is the incredible true story of Elizabeth Packard’s fight for personal freedom in the latter half of the 19 century in America. Incarcerated in an insane asylum for the (unproven) crime of holding her own opinions, she fought for years for her own and other women’s freedom.
Despite her life time of effort, some relics of these repressive and misogynist laws still linger in Western law today.

Benjamin Gilmour is an author and filmmaker and musician- and his day job is as a paramedic.

‘ The Gap ‘ is his fifth book and covers just one small period in his career as a paramedic. Paramedics are first responders to medical emergencies and work under incredible stress- so it is not surprising that the coping mechanism is humour and this account of one horrendous Christmas period is full of  Benjamin and his co medic John seeing the humour in their situations.  In his yearly break Benjamin makes films- in war zones!

L.A LArkin – widow’s island

L.A Larkin - WIDOW'S ISLAND

Another page turner from L.A Larkin. This one starts off chillingly and gets colder page by page as the heroine, a widowed scientist with a teenage daughter, becomes the victim of an online stalker. Stephanie retreats to a remote island but soon realises there is nowhere safe and strange secrets from her past begin to surface. Then her stalker steps off the screen and things take an even nastier turn!

L.A Larkin - THE SAFE PLACE

A psychopathic arsonist is on the loose in this chilling story set in a forest fire. In this slightly longer read from the author herself, we learn just how to cover your tracks if you want to burn someone's house down - with them in it! Maybe too much information here!
